EA's Code Wars Across The Globe
On February 22, 2014, programmers gathered in EA Studio Cities around the globe, Bucharest, Redwood City, Stockholm and Vancouver to team up and create the best mobile app or game in just 12 hours. Participants came from all over to compete – one team in Bucharest even traveled 10 hours by train to join in on the competition.
Small teams (5 max) faced off in each location to compete in both the main mobile challenge as well as a series of side quest challenges for a chance to win cash and prizes. At the end of the day, each mobile game was presented and judged by a panel of EA experts to select a winner in each location who would then have a chance at the grand prize.
Each location competed on the same day, which led to much excitement on the ground within a 24-hour window across multiple time zones. Energy was abundant as competitors (Code Warriors) threw themselves into problem solving and even some learning new mobile languages on the fly.
The winning apps were scored on originality, functionality and presentation, and after much deliberation the winning mobile game came from Stefan Dinca and Sorin Rizea in Bucharest where the team presented a nearly final product in just a few short hours that had multi-touch features, functional gameplay and a great presentation that saved the world from an attack of UFOs. The project was built in Flash using the Adobe Air run-time environment for mobile devices and the Starling 2D framework for GPU accelerated graphics.
Now that they’ve won they’ll be sent on an all-expenses paid trip to an EA Studio of their choice to get a behind-the-scenes treatment learning more about how EA makes games!
