Madden NFL 21 - Derwin James vs. The World - Week 6

Let’s see what happened this week. Derwin James caused a family quarrel, Anderson .Paak had a “hand cramp,” and we crowned the official Madden Championship Series King of the Hill.

That’s a lot for one week. Let’s take a look at how it all went down.

.Paak came in with the lead track on the Madden NFL 21 soundtrack and overwhelming confidence. As we know by now, that just fuels Derwin’s competitive nature. Well, that and his drive to drop triple digits on one of his challengers.

We’ve seen a lot over the course of the season. Lil Baby passed the sticks to someone else. Quavo just stopped playing. Lil Yachty flat out shut off the console. With .Paak, he decided to take on Derwin with a squad by his side, his son and godson.

But unfortunately for them Derwin shows no mercy and spares nobody.

And that’s where we’re at. Derwin has broken up a family. It’s not the first time a friendly game of Madden has fractured a household, but it might be a first for the Madden Championship Series. Apologies to .Paak and his family. EA is currently forming a support group for those who have been embarrassed by Derwin publicly. (Editor's Note: In no shape, way, or form, does the writer of this article speak for EA or any alleged support groups)

But a new challenger has entered the chat. Next week, we have Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver and reigning Super Bowl champion, Tyreek Hill. The division rivals have met in Madden before, and Derwin did not ease up at all. Tyreek has been wanting a revenge game for a while, and now he has that chance. We’ll just have to see if he can slow down the Derwin Domination train.

Joke vs. Drini

Not only are these players two of the best Madden competitors in MCS history, but they also have a contested record against each other. Joke is the reigning Madden Bowl champion, Drini is one of the few to win multiple belts. It only makes sense that the first MCS tournament of the season would come down to this talented pair.

Drini was able to come out of the first quarter with a field goal, but the key play in the first half was a critical interception. Joke took a deep shot that Drini picked off at the goal line. He was then able to put together a long drive for a touchdown. Joke answered with a long drive himself, but was forced to settle for the field goal. The half ended 10-3 Drini.

Bend but don’t break was the name of Drini’s game. Joke consistently put together quality drives, but Drini made things very difficult for Joke in scoring position. Drini repeatedly forced the reigning champ to kick FGs.

In the final minutes, Drini forced Joke to burn through his remaining timeouts and hit a massive dot to … stop at the one-yard line. The strategy here was to burn more clock and give Joke less time to score, but the twist there was that Joke came up with a huge stop with superb goal line defense, forcing Drini to take a FG instead of the TD he would’ve had earlier. That made the score 13-9 with just 20 seconds left. That meant that Joke just needed one drive to win instead of two if Drini scored with a TD.

There’s room for debate on that strategy, but either way, it was enough. Drini came away as the Madden NFL 21 King of the Hill. For that, he earned $12K and a fancy little trophy. Congrats to Drini!
