The next mocap evolution: Markerless motion capture

New markerless technology unlocks more authentic movement and immersive gameplay for players

There’s a moment in motion capture where performance becomes something more. An athlete explodes off the line. A character shifts their weight before a decisive move. A subtle gesture carries emotion without a single word.

For the teams capturing these moments, it is not just about recording movement. It is about preserving the nuance, the intensity, and the humanity behind every action.

For players, those moments are what make a game feel alive. The difference between something that looks real and something that feels real often comes down to how authentically motion is captured and translated into the digital world.

At Electronic Arts, that pursuit continues to evolve. Teams are exploring new ways to capture performance with greater freedom, scale, and fidelity, pushing beyond the limitations of traditional setups. The latest advancements come through markerless motion capture, a breakthrough that is transforming how EA captures human performance and brings it into games.

“It’s creativity. It’s talent. And it’s passion. Our teams are innovative and always looking for new opportunities.”

What is markerless motion capture?

Nigel Nunn, Senior Motion Capture Manager at EA Create Capture, has spent years working at the intersection of performance and technology, helping translate real human movement into the moments players feel on screen.

Now, with markerless technology moving into production-level activities, that process is opening up in entirely new ways to capture that authentic experience.

“With traditional motion capture, you’re confined to a studio and you have to wear suits with markers all over your body. With markerless motion capture, it’s tracking a human body, so it’s trained on being able to identify a body, and it tracks the features of a body,” says Nigel.

Instead of building performances around the limitations of a studio, Nigel and his team can now follow the performance itself, wherever it happens. Using high-resolution, high-speed video cameras combined with AI and computer vision, teams can capture motion across much larger, more dynamic spaces.

“With markerless motion capture, we can go to the people. We can set up indoors or outdoors. The versatility is there,” Nigel says.

For teams on the ground, that shift is immediate. Setup becomes faster, and constraints fall away.

“Fewer cameras, no requirements on suits, you can pretty much take it anywhere and do mocap within minutes if you want to,” says Nigel.

A behind the scenes look at how some of the mocap tech is used for franchises like UFC.

Bringing better movement to EA games

The potential for markerless motion capture extends across EA's portfolio, helping teams capture more authentic performances in ways that weren't previously possible.

For EA SPORTS FC, that means creating more natural player movement, ball interactions, and football performances that reflect the speed, agility, and emotion of the world's game.

For EA SPORTS UFC, the technology opens new possibilities for capturing the fluid movement, striking, grappling, and subtle body mechanics that define mixed martial arts.

As teams across EA continue exploring new applications, markerless motion capture has the potential to support an even wider range of experiences, helping developers create richer, more authentic gameplay for players.
